Domtar is turning pulp into passion by bringing the art and science of papermaking directly into schools and communities across Wisconsin.
In recent months, employees from Domtar’s Rothschild and Nekoosa mills have volunteered their time and talent to deliver engaging, hands-on educational experiences to hundreds of students and community members.
Domtar at STEM Fest

Domtar played a key role at the Northcentral Technical College STEM Fest in Rothschild. Held April 11–12, the event welcomed more than 3,000 sixth and seventh graders, along with more than 1,500 members of the public. It featured hands-on activities designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Domtar’s exhibit put papermaking front and center. Volunteers from the Rothschild Mill helped attendees create their own sheets of paper while explaining the underlying science and environmental considerations of the process. The event was hosted in partnership with the Michigan Tech Mind Trekkers, a team of undergraduate and graduate students who specialize in science-based outreach.
Papermaking at Washington Elementary

On May 2, Domtar’s Nekoosa Mill team joined fourth-grade students at Washington Elementary as part of the school’s “Wisconsin Wonders” curriculum. Nine employees from the Domtar Connects team led a papermaking demonstration, teaching students about the pulping process, tree sustainability and how recycling plays a role in every stage of paper production.
Each of the 45 students had the chance to make two sheets of their own handmade paper, experimenting with color mixing and blending to create vibrant designs.
“The kids were thrilled to get their hands dirty — tearing wet lap, mixing colors and creating something with their own hands,” said Kelly Olinyk, Pulp & Power clerk. “The energy was contagious. They were excited, engaged and already asked if we’d come back next year.”
Community Connection Through Craft
These outreach efforts highlight Domtar’s commitment — not just to the paper industry, but to education and community engagement.
By giving students and families the chance to experience papermaking firsthand, Domtar is creating meaningful learning moments that could inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and sustainability leaders.
Whether in a classroom or at a large-scale community event, Domtar’s message is clear —paper has a powerful story to tell, and the company is proud to help tell it — one handcrafted sheet at a time.
